The Kensington docks that can connect multiple monitors to your PC or Mac

Connecting more than one monitor to your PC or Mac is a great way to increase your virtual desktop and that makes it easier to multitask and tackle large projects. Kensington has a range of products to suit any solution.

Tech Guide took a look at the Kensington SD5200T Thunderbolt 3 Dock and the SD4800P which can not only connect multiple monitors but also increase connectivity and power delivery.

It’s suitable for business professionals, designers, video editors and gamers who want more room to move.

KENSINGTON SD5200T THUNDERBOLT 3 DOCKING STATION – $299.99

The docking station works with Windows and Mac computers and can provide data transfer speeds up to 40Gbps which means you’d be able to transfer a 4K movie in less than 30 seconds.

It also makes it possible to connect two 4K displays.

The docking station can even support 5K or 4K connections which is ideal for video editors and designers who need high resolution, superior contrast and accurate colour.

The device includes a USB-C and USB 3.0 ports on the front along with two Thunderbolt 3 docks on the back alongside a DisplayPort, Ethernet, another USB 3.0 port and a 3.5mm audio port.

It would have been nice to see a HDMI port included here as well as another option to connect or monitor or even a TV.

We used the Kensington SD5200T docking station to connect two 32-inch monitors to a 27-inch iMac via Thunderbolt 3 along with two external hard drives in a daisy chain.

To save space the dock can be mounted to the back of any VESA-compatible external display with a mounting plate so you can keep your desktop less cluttered.

KENSINGTON SD4800P TRIPLE VIDEO DOCK – $219.99

If you are a PC user and want to connect up to three monitors then this is the dock for you.

It allows for data transfers at up to 10Gbps and up to 60W of power delivery from a single cable.

This makes it really easy to set up – it’s just a plug and play with no need to download drivers.

There is a HDMI port and two DisplayPorts with support for full high definition monitors at 60Hz on a DP1.4 compliant laptop.

To expand your connectivity, the SD4800P also has six USB ports – one USB-C 3.1 for power delivery and data transfer and one USB-A 3.1 Gen 2 port as well as four rear USB 3.0 ports.

The dock will connect to any Windows 7 laptop or above that’s equipped with USB-C.

Users will also find a Gigabit Ethernet port to provide a wired networking connection as well as a combo 3.5 mm headphone and microphone jack so you can connect your favourite headset as well.

For added convenience Kensington has included a 1 m USB-C to USB-C cable for easier setup and multiple desktop configurations.

The docket can also be mounted to the back of any VESA-compatible monitor to keep it off the desktop and reduce your clutter.

Users also have access to the free Kensington DockWorks software that can help improve the performance and security of your connections.
